How It Works

GenerLink transfer switch installed behind a home hydro meter by Speedy Electric — authorized GenerLink dealer Ontario

The GenerLink transfer switch mounts directly behind your home’s hydro meter. When the power goes out, simply connect your portable generator to the GenerLink using the supplied cord and your home is back up and running — typically within minutes. Four built-in indicator lights let you know exactly what’s happening, including when utility power has been restored.

Unlike a traditional transfer switch, there’s no complex wiring inside your panel and no need to manually flip breakers. It’s one of the simplest, most cost-effective backup power solutions available for Ontario homeowners and cottage owners.

Frequently Asked Questions

The GenerLink transfer switch mounts behind your hydro meter. During an outage, you connect your portable generator to the GenerLink using the GenerLink cord, which restores power to your home through your existing electrical panel.

Yes. The GenerLink is CUL certified for use in Canada and approved by many utility authorities in Ontario, including Hydro One. Note that some Ontario utilities do not permit portable generator connections to their meters — we'll confirm compatibility for your area before installation. The GenerLink is not currently approved in BC, QC, NT, or NU.

Most portable generators are compatible. The key is ensuring your generator has the proper outlet. We'll help you confirm compatibility — just call us or send us your generator's model information.

We supply cords in 20, 40, and 60 foot lengths, with 80 and 100 foot available by special order. The right length depends on where your generator will be positioned relative to your meter. Note that 40A GenerLinks are recommended for cord lengths up to 60 feet only.

We generally recommend installing a whole-home surge protector directly on your panel rather than relying on a surge-protected GenerLink alone. This protects your home regardless of whether the GenerLink is in use — and avoids the potential cost of a Hydro One disconnect/reconnect fee if the GenerLink itself takes a surge hit. Hydro One allows one free disconnect/reconnect per year.

The GenerLink has four indicator lights. When the UTILITY light turns green, your utility power is back. The GenerLink will continue to prioritize generator power until the generator is shut off, at which point it automatically switches back to utility power.

No. The GenerLink functions as an interconnection device only and does not create any risk to your appliances. As with any generator setup, choosing a quality generator is important.
